How to Measure

  1. Open Install the Demo App and set it up for first use (see “How to Use the Tire Tread Demo App”)

  2. Press Open Scanner

Position Device Correctly

  1. (only on iOS)

Focus with the camera on the tire until a focus point is set, sometimes it helps to vary the distance to the tire (move the phone back and forth)Position your device in the right distance of about 20cm (8 inches) pointing to the left or right shoulder of the tire
  1. If on iOS, firstly detect tire by moving device back and forth slowly (the camera should be pointing at the tire)

  2. Align the tire overlay with the outer tire shoulder, keep approximately 20cm (pay attention to the audio or visual feedback)

  • Press Start (or use the volume down button if you can’t see the display)

  • Make a 7.5 second long recording of the tire running surface, from one tire shoulder to the other in an arc, while keeping the distance steady

  • The scan will stop automatically after 7.5 seconds (if “Fast” is configured as “Scan Speed”), by clicking Stop (or use the volume down button if you can’t see the display) you can stop the scan earlier, but this is not recommended
    1. Once aligned, start the scan by tapping anywhere on the screen

Move Device Slowly Across the Tire Tread

    1. Move your device slowly and steady towards the inner tire shoulder, always keep a distance to the tire of approximately 20cm

    2. The Scan will automatically stop after approximately 7 seconds; the device will vibrate strongly and make a sound once the scan is done.

    3. Wait for the result

    Dos, Don’ts & Scanning Tips

Pay attention to the audio, haptic (vibration) and visual distance feedback

    • Make sure that the screen orientation lock setting of your OS is not active

    • Make sure you have a stable internet connection

    • Make sure that no other tires are visible in the scan, especially no tires should be directly next to or on top of each other

    • 90% of the recording should be the tread

    • The camera must keep the focus on the tire while moving across the tire

    • Keep a distance of about 20cm (8 inches) from the running surface while recording

    • Use the volume down button of the device to start and stop a recording, if you can’t see the screen (which is usually the case when measuring tires mounted on a vehicle)Make sure to record the tread and not the floor, tilt your phone accordingly while scanning

    • Make sure that the screen orientation lock setting of your OS is not active

    • Make sure you have a stable internet connection

    How to Interpret the Results

    • The results screen, which appears automatically after the measurement, after a short waiting period, displays the tread depth in either mm or inches (depending on your configuration).

    • The measured value above the tire image represents the global tread depth of the entire tire. This value is calculated from all individual measurements.

    • The three measured values below the tire image represent the tread depth of the respective region (for more details, see Details), it’s not representing measurements of single grooves.

    • The Details button opens a PDF report with a visual representation of the tire tread. The Feedback button leads you to a screen where you enter manual measurements (more infos see sections below).

How to Integrate the SDK in your Application

To use or test the tire tread scanning capability fully integrated in your software, you can integrate our SDK. The demo application is a showcase example on how the SDK can be integrated. More information can be found on the official SDK documentation page (https://documentation.anyline.com/main-component/index.html).

    Product Features & Limitations

    Supported Devices

As a rule of thumb, we currently support all Android devices that have been released within the last 3 years and are in the high-end segment of devices. If you have specific questions regarding this, please contact us, or just test your device with the demo app. Tablet devices are also supported.

If you notice any problems with your device, please report them to us.

Minimum Requirements for Devices - General

    • Support for video recording with at least a resolution of 1920x1080

    • High-end camera

    • Torchlight feature (continuous flashlight)

    Android
    • Android device with API level 28 or newer

    • Smartphones: Samsung Galaxy S10 or better (in terms of camera and hardware specifications)

      • e.g. Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy A53, Samsung Galaxy S21, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung Galaxy S23, Google Pixel 5, Google Pixel 6 …

    • Tablets: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 or better (in terms of camera and hardware specifications)

    iOS
    • iOS device with iOS version 16.4 or newer, or iPadOS 16.4 or newer

    • Smartphones: iPhone X or better

      • e.g. iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone SE (3rd Generation), iPhone 12, iPhone 13 …

    • Tablets: iPad Pro (3rd+ generation) or better, iPad Mini (6th generation) or better

    Supported Platforms

The Demo App and the Tire Tread SDK is currently available for Android and iOS. We are also working on support for Cross-Platform-Frameworks like React Native, Flutter, Cordova, .NET Maui and Web Browsers (JavaScript) and UWP (Windows). If you are interested in one of these platforms, please get in touch.

    Internet Connection

The product requires a stable internet connection. We recommend at least 15 Mbit/s download speed and at least 4 Mbit/s upload speed for a useable experience.

    User Guidance

The user is supported with audiovisual and haptic (vibration) feedback to perform a good measurement. The technology is designed to be used even when the display of the device is not visible (which is usually the case when measuring tires mounted on a vehicle).

    Measurement Result

The results are returned by the SDK digitally in JSON format (1 global value and 3 regional measurement values). Also a PDF report with the summary (including a 3D map of the tire tread) is returned. After the measurement, the results can be easily processed and sent to a third-party system.

    Supported Measurement Systems

    • Metric system (mm)

    • Imperial system (32nds of an inch)

    Supported Tires

Currently, the solution is optimized for passenger car tires and commercial tires (trailer tires only so far); measurement inaccuracies may occur with other tires. We are working on optimizing the solution for commercial tires, OTR (off the road) tires and aircraft tires as well.

Snow chains, all types of coverings, dirt, snow, water, spikes can have an influence on the measurement accuracy.

    Accuracy

    • A measuring accuracy within 0.5 mm (≈ 1/32”)

    Feedback

As Anyline, we take feedback from our customers, prospects and end-users about our products very seriously. If you have any feedback for us or a feature request, please just get in touch with your contact at Anyline.

    FAQs

I get no habtic (vibration) feedback on Android

    • Make sure your device is not on “do not disturb”

    • Make sure your device is not in “silent mode”

    • Go to Settings > Sounds and Vibration > Vibration Intensity; check that the intensity for System is turned on

Is the tire tread scanning capability part of the SDK which includes the TIN/DOT, Tire Size, Tire Commercial ID, VIN, License Plate … scanners?

No, the tire tread scanning capability is part of a separate SDK. But using both SDKs in the same application is of course possible.

Can I test the Tire Tread scanner with the “Anyline Scanner” app which is available in the app stores?

Currently the Tire Tread scanner is only testable via a separate demo app. See section “How to Get the Demo App”.
